Spitfire Audio has released LABS, a free virtual instrument that is a platform for their present and future freeware expansion libraries.
LABS was previously a collection of affordable libraries (all proceeds went to the charity), but running on the full version of Native Instruments Kontakt – a major obstacle for producers with a limited budget. Spitfire Audio revamped the series, made it free, and most important, now uses its own plugin engine.
At the moment, LABS features two sound libraries, Soft Piano and Strings. Soft Piano was recorded at Air Edel Studios back in 2008. Its soft tone is achieved by placing a thin strip of felt between the hammers and the strings. This piano sound is popular in genres such as pop, dance, chillout etc.
Strings library was recorded at Spitfire HQ with fourteen of London’s best string players. This ensemble was captured using a wide range of microphones including a vintage BBC AXB1.
The LABS plugin is available in VST2, VST3, AAX and AU formats for Windows and MacOS. You will have to install the Spitfire App on your computer (an account is required), then click on “Get” buttons near each library. Soft Piano and Strings will appear in Spitfire App under “My Products” section.
