The newly-launched Alter/Ego by Plogue, is a free vocal synthesis instrument for Windows and Mac.

Alter/Ego is based on the award winning technology featured in Plogue’s Chipspeech – a vintage-style speech synthesizer which recreates the sound of famous 80′s voice synthesis chips. It features 8 different voices, each with its own characteristic timbre. But Alter/Ego’s target is not to recreate 80’s voice technology, rather it focuses on more “modern” (1990+) singing synthesis algorithms and research.

As specified by the developer “is specially tailored for musical needs – simply type in your lyrics, and then play on your MIDI keyboard. It’s a true synthesizer, the sound can be extensively modified for easy and expressive performances.”

Alter/Ego was launched today and is now available for free and instant download as standalone, VST, AU, RTAS/ AAX plugins in 32 or 64-bit for both Windows and Mac. At the moment, only one character voice bank is available (Daisy Voice Bank) so don’t forget to download it too (is located in the downloads section). A readme file explaining how to install the bank is included.

Download size is 12.3MB (the Alter/Ego player) + 227MB (the Daisy Voice Bank).
